The National Parks #20: Joshua Tree, California

If Yosemite ‘belongs’ to San Francisco, than Joshua Tree ‘belongs’ to LA. The park is a relatively short drive from anywhere in Southern California and much more hospitable than Death Valley, so this is where people in this area visit when they want to experience nature. Not that it’s not a great park, it is, it’s just that it’s a little overcrowded if you visit at the wrong time of year. People in this area don’t really see Joshua Tree as a National Park either, but more of like a local place to drive to when they’re bored. In this way, it’s probably the park most filled with douche-bags and people who don’t care at all about parks. It’s sad really because Joshua Tree has an impressive diversity of scenery and plant life in addition to mining ruins, trails, campgrounds, and a dam. I guess what i’m saying is, you should absolutely visit Joshua Tree but try to ignore the locals.
