Eric traced her wrist. “That’s quite a tat,” he said, dropping the octave of his voice down to a velvety rumble. “What’s it mean?”

“It’s just a quote.” She waved her hand in dismissal. She didn’t want to share that story with him. It was a little too personal for a causal anecdote. The tattoo had been another impulsive decision, much like agreeing to this blind date. She and Dean had been eating lunch at their desks one afternoon, her mind wandering as she tore into her Cubano sandwich. She couldn’t even imagine what was going on in the apartment across the way, but there was a huge Cheshire cat grin painted on their window. That grin made her unbelievably happy and she turned to him and said, “I think I want to get a tattoo that says, ‘We’re all mad here’.” He looked up from his skinless, boneless, broiled chicken breast, smiled, and said, “You must be or you wouldn’t have come here.” She was pretty sure that was the exact moment he became her best friend in the whole world.
