Don't be reading this if you're eating anything

It quite literally made me sick to my stomach.

Apparently stolen brides in Chechnya aren't happy, so they're taken to be exorcised at a mosque where the imam also claims cures for mental illnesses. The cause of these brides' unhappiness, apparently, isn't being kidnapped or sold or given into marriages they didn't want, but entities like djinni (genies, Arabic spirits) that have fallen in love with them. So the imam beats the brides with a small stick and shouts verses of the Koran at them.

Amy That is absolutely horrible... I would comment on the actual post but I don't have a Livejournal account. Anyway... That's just wrong... I don't care what their 'religion' says... (being an atheist I don't much care what any religion says) or their imam that's just horrible.

I agree that this is horrible. This shouldn't be done.
I'm a Muslim girl myself, and I just hate it when people say that they are Muslims, and then wrongly quote the Quran for their own purposes. Especially men.
I'll have to say, Amy, that this is not what Islam is about. If it was, then I would have left it a long time ago. In Islam, women and men are told that they are exactly, and that men may not mistreat women in any way shape or form, physically or verbally. In fact, there is a small inside joke among men and women who truly understand Islam, that Islam seems to favor the women more.
In a nutshell, Islam does not tell us to do what the "imam" has done so. That's just a pretender, or an ignorant person, saying so. Its just as if i say that i'm a fish. But saying it does not make me a fish. Just as that man's saying that this is Islam does not make it part of Islam.
