Trouble Comes in Threes 3.4
I’d fucked my back up playing football in high school. Since then, I had a disk that slipped out entirely too easily. It fucking hurt, and I had trouble walking when it happened. It usually put me in bed for several days every time. The normal routine was ice packs on my back, right above my ass, and swallowing anti-inflammatories until the swelling went down—something I didn’t have time for right now. Besides, the very idea of anything ice cold on my skin sent shivers down my back.I hauled several loads of wood inside, moving carefully. I left the door cracked so I didn’t have to deal with opening it every time. One more trip should do it. Huffing, I looked at the cats. “You know, the last time I left the door open, I got a surprise. I’m really tempted to shut it.”“Meeow.”“Yeah, Tiger, I’m talking about you guys. I really hope there aren’t any more cats lurking out there. Two is about all I can handle.”A cold breeze rushed through the room and both cats shot off deeper into the house, away from the door. Didn’t blame them. I’d get as far away from that door as I could too. Too bad I had to be the one to go get the wood.
Laughing at myself, I walked back outside in the freezing ass rain. I was talking to them as if they understood me. I didn’t feel so… lonely with them around. How sad. What the fuck was my life coming to when two cats offered the best conversation around,
