The Death of Print/Publishing, Part MCCLWTFXVIII

Dorchester Publishing recently announced they were dropping their mass market line and moving to an e-book/print-on-demand model.  Dorchester's president John Prebich describes his company as pioneers, boldly leading us into the electronic frontier.  This has led to a new round of "print is dying," and e-books are the way of the future.  There's an almost religious fervor to it.[image error]

J. A. Konrath suggests the end is nigh for commercial publishers, and self-publishing is the way to go.  His...

Jim Terri, I don't believe mass market paperbacks are going anywhere, at least not any time soon. Dorchester is one publisher, and they've been having trouble for years. I wouldn't take them as a bellwether of things to come.

Veronika KaoruSaionji I prefer paperback over e-books. For me e-books are superb possibility, if paperbacks are sold out (main reason) or too expensive (or post taxes are too much expensive). E-books are good option for fans from small nation in middle Europe (Czech republic) which have no own Amazon (I depend on German or English ones!) and must most of them purchase via on-line store (I mean these books which are not translated into Czech and I must read them in English language). But if I could buy paperback, I would buy it. Even If I sometimes see in Czech bookstore some English paperbacks which I want (small miracle), I buy it eagerly. On paparbacks I hate the most post taxes and time which I must wait for it - by on-line purchasing. When is certain book in my bookstore (and possibly in Czech translation), I buy it happily. But if I can´t do it, so I think about e-books. (But often I still buy it in paperback form via on-line purchase.) And I pray for e-books for every books which are sold out! Common thing in Czech republic. What can poor fan do after it if don´t make illegal copy from library? (My humbly apology for all authors.)Also, e-books are for me last possibility, not good, but better than nothing. I want (and need) have this possibility! But, paperbacks are certainly much better option for me. I love paperbacks. Only e-books never can´t be option for me.
