My Writing Process – Percolation Required #AmWriting

Normandie

DreamCastThanks to Katherine Deane for tagging me in this Writing Process Blog Hop!

I’ve only been writing for a few years, and I’m just now hitting my stride with writing daily (or almost daily) and really focusing on writing as a full-time career.

1. What am I working on?

I’m editing the second Daddy’s Girl book, Daddy’s Game and writing the second book in the Pirates of the Jolie Rouge Trilogy. (The first one Rescued by the Buccaneer was released yesterday!)

2. How does my work differ from others in its genre?

Well my series differ because the Daddy’s Girl series focus on couples with who have a D/s relationship that involves a Daddy Dom and his little girl. The series is about a group of girls who have an informal Daddy’s Girl club and each book focuses on the relationship of one of the club members.

My pirate series is different because I’m not aware of any other pirate romances that involve BDSM relationships. It may be BDSM-lite to some with mostly spanking and bondage but as Frederica and Gaston’s relationship develops they get into kinkier stuff in later books. I’m currently writing a gang bang scene and you just might see some candle wax and more elaborate bondage.

Also, I came to writing in this genre without being a big consumer of it. For the most part I’ve always read mysteries and thrillers so I just write and I don’t always know what I’m “supposed to do”, so I think that keeps my stories fresh and not tainted by having read hundreds of romances. Plus I’m a psychologist so that brings a unique flavor to my work. I’m fascinated by human nature and why my characters do things, and I think that comes across in my work.

3. Why do I write what I do?

Ever since I can remember I was telling my friends sex stories then a few years ago I fell in love and got re-married. While my new husband was overseas I started writing sexy stories. At the time I was a blogger and one day he told me that my sexy stories were better than my non-fiction writing. After being slightly offended I realized he meant it as a compliment and I submitted some shorter pieces and had them published. I found that I loved writing erotica and erotic romance and I think it’s a great fit for my writing.

4. How does my writing process work?

I get an idea in my head and then I let it percolate while I’m writing other things. I usually have at least three or four stories that my mind is working on. Then I will get ideas for scenes, plot points, and character details and I take notes on them. When the story is about 75% figured out I start writing.

Some stories come to me quicker than others and more more completely. The pirate trilogy, for example came to me in record time. In a matter of days I had a rough outline for six books, broken down into two trilogies. I come up with ideas for each of them all the time. While I’m not terribly detailed in my outlines, it helps when crafting a series to know what is going to be revealed in each book, and to tie all the books together with different threads.

Sometimes other stories try to muscle their way in while I’m working on something else. While I was writing the second Daddy’s Girl book, which is the story of Carmen and her football player boyfriend Natron Dakers, I couldn’t get Charmaine and her story out of my mind.  Her book will be the next one – the third Daddy’s Girl book. So once I’ve finished the pirate trilogy her story should be rather quick to write.

We have a houseful of kids and they keep me super busy so I try to write close to 2000 words a day or edit several chapters  a day, but sometime life gets in the way. Whenever I get discouraged about my productivity I remind myself that my the little ones will be out of the house before I know it and to enjoy them while they’re at home. Once they grow up I’ll have plenty enough time to write more. For now I do the best I can and value what time I have to write.

Thanks for stopping by to read about my process. Next week you can read about the writing process of my friend HK Carlton.

H K Carlton is a multi-published Canadian author of historical, contemporary, and erotic romance.
