Richard Thanks for posting this! I have been wondering how notes were handled on the Kindle. Great to see this explanation.

Just FWIW: these days I mostly read and proof on an Android tablet using Mantano Reader software, which has excellent note-taking and export capability. A good choice for people who aren't on Kindle/Amazon. E.g., you can make your notes, save into an HTML file with context/notes/location of each, and then e-mail it to yourself or save and extract the file via USB cable. It also seems to have some export/import facility for sharing notes, but I haven't used that.
