Savannah Dupree is a freshman studying at Boston University on a full scholarship. But academic excellence is only one of her gifts. Savannah possesses something even more remarkable than her quick mind and insatiable curiosity for learning. With a simple touch, she can see an object’s past–a skill that puts her life in danger, when her studies bring her into contact with a centuries-old English sword and the terrible secret hidden within the blade’s history.
In all his three hundred years of living as one of the Breed, vampire warrior Gideon never dreamed he’d see the blade again that spilled his young brothers’ lives ages ago in London. Ever since the boys’ deaths, Gideon’s been on a personal quest to rid the world of Rogue vampires, but now he can’t help wondering if the brutal slaying was something more sinister–an act perpetrated by an unknown enemy. An enemy who is apparently living in hiding somewhere in Boston. There’s one certain way to prove Gideon’s suspicion, but it will mean using innocent, gifted Savannah to help uncover the full truth–a truth that will shatter everything she knows about herself and the world around her. And with danger closing in from all sides, the passion that ignites between Gideon and Savannah will tempt them to risk their hearts and lives for a love that might just last an eternity….

”A Touch” is an apt description for this foray into the relationship of Gideon and Savannah. Throughout this wonderful series, the reader always felt the deep connection these two had, maybe by virtue of them having been “Control Central”. They were an anchor; infrastructure if you will. For that reason, I was looking forward to solidifying them in my mind’s eye.
Instead, I feel as though I got that “Touch”, but it was often more ethereal than tangible. Not necessarily a bad thing, for prolonging the mystery can be a great tactic for a series. It’s just not what I expected. In fact, in one brief scene, I felt more insight into Tegan than I felt about Savannah and Gideon from the entire novella. And Tegan being one of my favourites, I was choked up about that. (Nice touch, Ms. Adrian!)
If I think about it more in depth, what I take away is a more superficial look at Gideon, the entity, without really seeing any more of the essence of the/his character. I feel as though I see him differently in form, but I don’t see INTO him much differently…if that makes sense. As for Savannah, there are moments invoking a somewhat impersonal, police blotter account of how she came to be central to the cause, in place of the usual deeply emotional evolutions I’m used to reading about in the series. Another of my many gripes about novellas, but that’s a whole other topic…
Still in all, a much appreciated fill-in-some-blanks from this talented author, for what is truly amazing series.
