Sharing Credit at The Next Web

After I posted my my idea for The New York Times’ pay wall last week, I got a note from Boris Veldhuijzen van Zanten, founder and CEO of technology news site The Next Web. Apparently, that site’s pro membership offers a feature very similar to the one I described.

When our Pro readers share an article, and people on Twitter follow that link, we show their avatar and a follow button in the post. It works better than a paywall and has a much more positive feeling to it.

Boris sent me this example: an article that he shared, displaying his credit in a light orange band just above the first paragraph of the article.

Unfortunately, it’s not too obvious how to go about signing up for pro memberships: I hunted around a bit but couldn’t find any information until I registered for a free account; there’s a link to upgrade to pro once you’ve registered.
