When last we saw Imara, she and her family were gathered inthe cemetery in Edenton, across the lake from the family estate, Maisie House. It appeared that they were involved in an unusualy moonlight ceremony, dancingto the beat of drums, around a fire. Before that event, the family and most ofthe town had gathered for what turned out to be a double funeral. Days afterthe death of her husband, Ora Ward dropped dead suddenly in her sleep and thefamily was able to hold a double ceremony for the long-lived, long-time marriedcouple, united in death as they had been in life. The death of Brownlee Ward iswhat brought Imara and her cousins Chike and Cat to the town of Edenton NorthCarolina. Although she doesn’t say so, because she is so grateful that businessis booming, Imara is secretly pleased by the unexpected trip out of town. Thewoman is on the verge of burnout from working nonstop for three years to builda successful catering business.
