Time keeps slipping. How are you spending yours?

This is a guest post by Jason Pockrandt. More about Jason at the end of this post.

Time: the only resource you can’t replenish. So when you choose to spend it, spend wisely. It can’t be refilled no matter how hard we try or imagine that we can in some way get it back at the end of our lives. I know there are plenty of fathers out thereIMG_4535 right now reading this and thinking that they spend plenty of time with their children and that life is where they want it. I say, sure.

Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t

I know the question has come up before on the topic of work. How much we should work and how much we should spend with our children alongside us following the vision we have created for our lives? I have come to this realization…

I want it all. I want to make the most of the time that I am given with those that matter most to me.

In the end the time will be gone. It may be sooner than later. You may lose a loved one like a father or move to TN and you won’t have the luxury of a 10 minute drive to mom’s house. Nor the gift to go see Dad down the road.

It will have all been spent. Spent on work, on school, on a job that was blocking you from chasing your dreams and sucking the creativity from your souls. Why? I ask. Why waste your best years doing what doesn’t matter most to you. Working.

Working is great if it’s done in moderation.

Let me clarify something here. I am not opposed to working and having a job that pays the bills, fulfills a value of security and takes you to the next step. I am talking about spending 40 hours a week working or 60 hours at work while your children and your dreams take a back seat in life. Wasting away as we wait for something more. We sit on the sidelines waiting for the next big thing to happen. Hoping one day Jon Acuff will call and invite us to work with him.

News Flash! It doesn’t happen by waiting.

These things don’t happen by sitting around and waiting. We have to do the work. WE have to hustle. We have to show up through the imperfect blog posts and the scrambled podcast episodes. We must be willing to invest our time into what matters. Sure there is a balancing act that takes place in there quite often.

How do I make dinner, drive the kids to school, and when will I see my wife? If something in life matters you will make time to complete it. Time is slipping from you as we speak. It is waiting for you to go claim it. It is waiting for you to choose. Will you choose your family, your fun, your freedom? Or will you wait for the hourglass to drop it’s final grain of sand on your life and look back from the skies and ask…

Where did I spend my time? Was it alongside the people and places who mattered most to me? My Family, My Fun, and My Freedom. It is my wish for you today that you can answer Yes.

Where are you spending your time today? Are you being active in reaching your vision or do you falsely believe that time can be recycled?
