Talk about “left field”!

My read is done and I’m supposed to review the book, and all I have is flight of thought.   My defense mechanism was to dedicate myself to NOT read any other reviews before committing my own thoughts to “paper”, because like Leticia, I needed to organize my mental notes, to reign in the squash-ball-in-play that was my mind and so, for better or worse…

At no point in this book was it ever what I expected.  Correction:  I did expect the interview format, because there it was in the title.    I was hoping for the best erotic romance I’d ever read, especially based on a phenomenal pre-release marketing strategy, and yet bracing myself for dismal disappointment and a pass on a review rather than write a bad one.   I mean what does a man know about writing erotic romance?  Moreover, what does a man know about romance, period?… Right?… Right?…

Interview With A Master started for me, as less an erotic romance and more the described interview with definite erotic overtones.   Perhaps even erotica.   For me, it evolved more as a factual discourse on the BDSM world in this era of titillating offerings disguised as a romance, that target an audience of people looking for a “way”…a panacea.   Interview seemed gently geared to setting the record straight, in the nicest possible way.  And I was okay with that.

I got the point.   I appreciated the insights, the subtleties; things I’d been wondering about myself.  Not to put into practice, but to merely understand.  To put this whole “BDSM thing” where it belongs:  in perspective.  Not on a pedestal, and conversely, not in dark back rooms where its discussed in hushed tones along with other horrible things like devil worship and cellulite and toothpaste tubes squeezed in the middle…

And via ‘Master Jonah Noble’, Jason Luke quite eloquently accomplished that.    And I thought to myself, “isn’t this great?:  a sane voice of reason in a new niche, who will be able to reach that huge audience using appeal and a reality check”.  

…And then out of that left field in a few short pages, nay, the last few short pages, didn’t the bast…um, Master, turn this into the biggest, heart-stopping, snot producing tear-jerker of a romance I have ever read!

You win, Mr. Luke.  Hands-down.   I slap my own wrists (with a whip…just because I deserve it) for my aforementioned “man-conclusions”, and I bow to the Master.   And I acknowledge the lesson, because I am nothing if not anticipating your next offering!
