"Happily mellow and acceptably melancholy"

"He was happily mellow and acceptably melancholy like an old “10,000 Maniacs” song.  The sidewalk felt good beneath his feet.  The city sounds melted together into a pleasurable level of white noise.  He forgot about the smog, the glare, and the monotonous, market-driven, show-biz-conscious, homogeneity of Southern California.  Instead, he looked at the people walking on the sidewalk, driving the cars in the street, and riding the bicycles that weaved annoyingly and dangerously through traffic and pedestrians, with a bemused detachment."
