The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool. - Philip Seymour Hoffman

What a talent. So sad

Now for something a little more serious.

Addiction is a terrible beast to bear. It’s a disease — the same way depression and anxiety are diseases. There are ways to overcome it, but sometimes still there are those who still slip beneath the waves and don’t come back up. This time it was (from what we know) Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and what a life it took this time.

The man was talent, showmanship, class, and an all-around gent to work with. People have been saying such beautiful things about him online for the last couple of hours now, and it makes me wonder how he could have held his addiction. The truth is that an addict has needs, and ways around obstacles to get to those needs. It’s a rough, strife-ridden battle that isn’t always won. Sometimes people are scared into sobriety by the death of another addict; sometimes they wake up and see their lives and choose to turn a new chapter over, despite the pain and hardship it means to detox. Sometimes they try and fail; sometimes they never have a chance. Regardless of how it was for Hoffman, it seems as though he ultimately succumbed to his addiction, which is telling how the mind of someone going through this works. He had everything — fame, accolades, awards, friendships. And he still slipped. Because it’s that damn difficult for an addict to truly escape.

If you’re dealing with addiction, seek help. Whatever help you can. Friends, family, professionals. Because no matter what you accumulate in life, addiction can still raise its head like the beast that it is, and it can still consume if not stared down. Today it took a bright light from the world with it, and we all feel that loss.
