"Changes Coming Down" - you had questions?

Since I released my short free novel, Changes Coming Down in Hunting Under Covers a couple of weeks ago, I've had people PM and email me with questions. Since several were repeats, I thought I'd put the answers in a blog (because I'm lazy that way.)

What is your actual story in the anthology about? The anthology blurb doesn't say.

When I put it on my book list on my website, I had to come up with a blurb, so here it is:

Two years ago Scott and Casey were a couple, and it was good, but it wasn’t perfect. Scott was away a lot, playing hockey and aiming for the NHL, while sheriff Casey got lost in his job and his own head when he was alone. They needed something, or someone. And they found Will, a local ranch foreman. Will was strong, calm and the perfect fit. None of them have been ready to come out, but for two years they have all kept each other happy.

Now suddenly Will’s surrogate parents have died, his ranch is in jeopardy, and Casey’s reelection is being challenged. The days to come will shake the foundations of their relationship and may even break them apart. Unless they are strong enough together to handle the changes coming down.

- 64,000 words

Is your story some kind of spoof or humor piece? Is it related to the other stories?

No, mine is a serious M/M/M romance, with a mystery, and more angsty than funny (although I hope readers find moments of humor in it.) Other than a bit of a tease with how long it took my guys to actually eat the required bacon-and-eggs for the Hunt points, this story really has nothing to do with the Scavenger Hunt per se. Like with my M/M Group freebies, Into Deep Waters or Nor Iron Bars a Cage, I was inspired by the set-up that was given to me. But the story that came out of it stands alone as a short novel.

Why did you write M/M/M? - I prefer M/M.

I've wanted to do a menage story for a while. I think that any form of loving relationship adults enter into voluntarily can be a wonderful thing. But the more people you add to a relationship, the more complicated it gets. And so figuring out how to fit three strong guys into a balanced and loving three-way relationship was something I looked forward to.

I'm trying not to just keep rewriting the same story, (although I do love my sequels.) So I'm going to wander through the genres and tropes a bit. I know this won't be for everyone, and if you skip or down-rate Unacceptable Risk for being werewolves, or Full Circle for lack of a happy ending, or this one for the three guys, I will completely understand. There is no way every book I write will appeal to every reader.

Why did you start with Will, Casey and Scott as an established threesome? I really wanted to see them get together.

Weeeellll. You see, I thought I was writing a short story. So I thought that an established trio would let me write a little mystery plot and be done fast. 64,000 words later, I found out I was wrong.

Will you ever write that prequel? Will you show us what happens with Scott after the end of this book?

I have a hard time letting go of characters, after I spend that time in their heads, so... maybe. I might do either the how-they-met prequel, or the sequel, for these three men.

Will you release this story as a stand-alone?

Maybe. Someday. But the anthology is free, so I don't feel like there's a real reason to do that soon, since there's no cost to picking up the whole thing. Not to mention that there are some other very good stories in that anthology which I enjoyed, and hopefully you will too. The only reason to re-release would be if I someday write a related book - the prequel or sequel - and want matching covers.

.

The anthology is titled Hunting Under Covers and is a free release from ARe books, Smashwords and Divergent Publishing where J. Vaughn did the production on the book.

Idamus Heh, I like this one 'Why did you write M/M/M? - I prefer M/M'

And while I agree, I'm pretty sure you're not writing your stories for me :p

Authors should write what they want/like and then if we like the sound of it, we readers can read it

Kaje Harper Well, I know whenever a writer we like steps out of what has been their familiar zone, some readers will be disappointed. It's like when a favorite author of mine writes something really dark non-con/BDSM. I love their work but it tempers the excitement when a new book is likely to not work for me. So I do understand.

But fortunately reader tastes are wide - some like only my fantasy, or only my contemporary, or only the long novels and not shorts... They're welcome to let me know, but yeah, at the end of the day the guys yelling loudest in my head get their book, regardless.

Ije the Devourer of Books I like it when an author does something different. It is a bit like going on a mystery tour and not knowing where you will end up. Of course the ending and the journey might not be where you want it to be, or a place that is familiar but it is exciting and different. I know some readers prefer familiarity but i think reading something different is my chance to grow as a reader and also a chance for the writer to grow too.

And thank you very much for another free story!

Idamus If a favourite author writes something not my thing, I just ignore it :)

(But I'm not above poking friends, in order to get them to write specific genres)

Kaje Harper Yeah, and then I have favorite authors whose newest stories got a little stale, even though I like their work, because they stuck to the same tropes, and I just don't want that to happen. At the same time, romance often is a comfort read, so I do understand that.

I hope you like this one :)

Sunne Okaaaay, since noone has said this in this thread so far: It was great, a wonderful story, I loved it. And I'm really, really happy that you weren't able to write a short story. I'm hoping that we'll get to see what happens further, Scott's life isn't set yet.

message 7: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper No, the hardest part for Scott may be still to come. It's a question if I want to learn enough about how pro hockey works, on and off the ice, to write it...

I'm glad you liked it :)

message 8: by Sunne (new)

Sunne Oh...yes...which means he's still going to play ;)

I admit, my heart was bleeding a bit for him. He was so alone in the end and I wanted him to be with his men again. So I loved the interview.

message 9: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Well, he wouldn't quit unless they make him. I like Scotty - he's a stronger guy than he knows.

message 10: by Sunne (new)

Sunne That goes without saying. Through the whole story I admired him, he is one special guy. See....I think you need to learn about hockey ;)

message 11: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper I'm considering it. I'm a fan from way back (my brother played through high school) but the locker-room and board-room part that would come into play would be the part I'd have to research. I'm not ruling it out, though, because I'm curious myself how it would all work out. More hopeful now than ten years ago, as the first pro players in other sports are coming out, (all praise to them for having the guts to do that.)

message 12: by Sunne (new)

Sunne I wouldn't mind it at all - I mean reading a sequel ;)

You are right, I'm really happy about all those who now have the guts to come out. There is so much that still has to change. Funny though - I could imagine that Scott might have problems in the locker rooms because "of the gay" but not because of the "threeway".

message 13: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Hard to know - some people who have painstakingly made themselves okay with gay couples as being "just like het couples" will then still have trouble with any kind of polyamory. Because "two people faithful to each other" is as far as they can go with their expectations.

message 14: by Sunne (new)

Sunne Yes, of course. That is absolutely right. On the other hand nearly every straight guy gets the idea of a threesome - in his mind of course with two girls - so I can imagine comments like "Hey, you horndog, one isn't enough for you?" Not saying that they get the "nature of this threesome" but they like the idea and are a bit envious because they don't dare to cross that line.

message 15: by Kaje (last edited Feb 02, 2014 12:31PM) (new)

Kaje Harper Yeah, definitely there would be some of that ;)

Sunne :)

Connie Downloading it now, so happy you tried your hand at MMM with this one. MMM I love and enjoy a lot, so if it comes from one of my favourite authors, better for me! :)

It was fun to try something a little different, and I do have a real pull to come back to these three guys sometime.

Stephanie Nor Iron Bars a Cage is one of my favorite books, I reread it often. To get another amazing Kane Harper story for free, well, I'm amazed at your generosity. Changes Coming Down was a beautiful story. I would gladly have paid 6.99 for it without complaint. I hope someday you revisit Scott, Casey, and Will. Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us.

Aw, that's good to hear, thank you. I may come back to these three guys. I had a hard time stopping ;)

Jane Harper Oh Kaje, that was lovely! I've encountered a lot of bad M/M/M out there. Even when the sex is hot, the emotions and the relationships are lacking. I liked how you gave your couple an authentic, practical reason for seeking out a third.

You ever want to try M/M/F, I'd gladly read it - that's another sub-genre that could really use some better writing overall.

message 22: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper I'm so glad my threesome worked for you. :D

message 23: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Kaje you are on my list of favorite authors. I recently read this anthology and this was my favorite story. Hope there's a prequel and a sequel.

message 24: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper It's tempting. Thanks for letting me know you liked it :)
