Chapter 60: Innocents


As soon as the boys slipped into his lair, Taweel’s guard slammed down. Weft’s friends wore raiment edged in bronze thread. These hadarim were newer than new, with skinny arms and rounded cheeks. Shy and tongue-tied. Had he ever been that innocent?


Anger and sorrow tangled in Taweel’s heart. Those soft hands would soon be callused by training. Those bare feet would soon be shod for war. Those young boys would clap a breastplate over their hearts, but it wouldn’t protect them. Because in the fullness of time, like so many other guardian angels before them, they would be pierced.
