Verity Lambert Biography for 2015
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
A full-length biography of Verity Lambert, the first producer of Doctor Who, is to be published in January of next year. Drama and Delight: The Life and Legacy of Verity Lambert will see Richard Marson explore one of television’s most extraordinarily successful behind the scenes names.
It was Lambert, of course, who oversaw the launch of the series, cast William Hartnell as the Doctor and famously won that blazing argument with Sydney Newman about bug-eyed monsters.
Although probably still best known for launching Doctor Who, Lambert went on to oversee a huge range of some of the most celebrated British dramas including The Naked Civil Servant, Minder and Edward and Mrs Simpson. As well as being a pioneering figure at the BBC in the 1960s, she went on to blaze a trail for independent producers with her company, Cinema Verity.
Richard Marson is the author of last year’s JN-T: The Life and Scandalous Times of John Nathan-Turner, a somewhat notorious book due to its revelations about the 1980′s producer. If you haven’t read it yet, don’t let that put you off – it’s incredibly well researched and a rather moving account of the man at the helm of the programme in that era.
Drama and Delight will be published by Miwk in January 2015.
