Blog Post: If I were to buy ten books, what should they be?

Hi folks!

I’m planning a book buying excursion after I finish my latest manuscript, around February 8th or 9th, when I pretend to be a lady of leisure for a few days. This is possibly what I might look like, by the way:

I wanted to ask you–if I were to buy ten books, what should they be?  They could be non-fiction, or fiction of any genre, although I’m particularly hungry for sci-fi fantasy recs, and contemporary romances.  What do you think?

I would especially love some new release recommendations, since I’m completely out of touch with what is coming out in 2014. Also, other readers might get ideas from any comments you might make.

To spread the new releases around, I’m willing to give up to seven copies of my upcoming release FALLING LIGHT (A Game of Shadows novel) to any commenter that may want one. It’s perfectly lovely and fine to share your love of books without entering the giveaway – please mention in your comment if you would like to be considered for the contest.

Blog winners will be picked around mid-day on Friday the 24th.

Thanks so much, and happy reading!!!

Thea

Kim I would love to win a copy of your new book. I have loved everything I have read by you so far!

A great new series by Anne Bishop is Written in Red to be followed by Murder of Crows in March. It is an interesting twist on the shapeshifter genre in which shapeshifters are scary and actually eat people. They don't romance them. But it is the start of a romance too!

Some contemporary romances that are out right now, Samantha Young has a great series starting with On Dublin Road and ending with Before Jamaica Lane that just released. Great writer that definitely knows how to write about emotions.

Another good series is by Gina Maxwell that starts with Seducing Cinderella and ends with Fighting for Irish which was just released about MMA fighters and the woman they love.

I could go on and on. But I will stop here.

Esther Thanks for the contest opportunity :)

As for recommendations: Michael Sullivan's Riyria Revelations is a great fantasy trilogy. I also just discovered Grace Draven (fantasy romance) and really enjoyed her 2 novels, Master of Crows and Entreat Me. Elizabeth Hunter's Elemental Mysteries is wonderful. She's also started a new series; the first book is The Scribe.

Kim I'd love to get a copy of your book. I just finished reading "Luckiest Lady in London" by Sherry Thomas - have you ever read her? Her characters are absolutely awesome.
Three of my favorites are Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, and Faith Hunter - I love their series just as i love yours!

Jennifer Thank you for the contest!
I would recommend Kresley Cole. The Professional is outstanding, but so is her YA series so far, Poison Princess and also Endless Knight. And of course her IAD series.
I've also re-read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series a million times over...fantastic each time, though series declines after the fourth book for me.
I've also really enjoyed Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass series. Excellent writing.
Happy reading!

Anita I've just recently discovered Samantha Young and I'm now addicted (pretty much as I was when I discovered your books); read a couple of her freebie Urban Fantasy e-books then inhaled everything else, inc her latest series... so there's more than 10 books right there, then there's the other authors I can't live without:
JD Robb (Have to wait till the weekend for these, or I'm late for work)
Laurell K Hamilton
Lora Leigh
Rachel Caine
Keri Arthur
Carrie Vaughn
Jeaniene Frost
Yasmine Galenorn
Christine Feehan
Ilona Andrews
Amanda Carlson
Chloe Neill
Patricia Briggs
Deborah Cooke
Richelle Mead
... and many more (yup I'm a book worm that devours more than 100 books a year).
Would love a copy of Falling Light to add to my rather large library of books. :o)

message 8: by Shasha (new)

Shasha A copy of your book would make me ecstatic!

Here are my recommendations:
-Soulless--Gail Carriger
-Steel's Edge--Ilona Andrews
-Written In Red--Anne Bishop
-Bay's Mercenary(Unearthly World)--C.L. Scholey
-Alien, Mine--Sandra Harris
-The Battle Lord's Lady--Linda Mooney
-The Greyfriar--Clay & Susan Griffith
-Stone Guardian--Danielle Monsch
-Beloved Enemy--Janet Miller
-Grim--M.K. Eidem

Many of these have a series to go with them and not all of them are brand new. There are many different worlds, some not on Earth.

message 10: by Stacey (new)

Stacey Sadly too late for the prize round (Darn!) but here is a list for you anyway!

Brotherhood of the Black Dagger (JR Ward)

"Charley Davidson" series starting with First Grave on the Right (Darynda Jones)

"Cat and Bones" series and spinoffs (Jeanine Frost)

"Daughter of Smoke and Bones" trilogy (Laini Taylor)

"Mortal Instruments" series (Cassandra Clare)

"Succubus" series and "Vampire Academy" series in particular (Richelle Mead)

"All Souls" Trilogy (Deborah Harkness) - in my book clubs it's either really well loved or average.

Shiver (Maggie Stiefvater) I enjoyed this series - it is "quiet" and I'd read a lot of highly strung, ramped up series and I liked having the quiet time. Some others in my book clubs have found it a bit slow, however, some have read her other series and enjoyed them better...

"Anita Blake" or "Merry Gentry" series by Laurell K Hamilton
I have read the first of the following two series and they seem interesting or have potential

"Parasol Protectorate" (Gail Carriger) + 1 series
"House of Comarre" (Kristin Painter)

Others (not paranormal, para or urban fantasy or para romance):

Picnic at Hanging Rock* (Joan Lindsay)

He Died with a Felafael in his Hand and Tasmanian Babe Fiasco (John Birmingham)

"Poor Man's Orange"* trilogy, Playing Beatie Bow, My Sister Sif (Ruth Park)

A Town Like Alice* (Neville Shute)

The Shiralee* (D'Arcy Niland)

*Movie or mini series that are also worth watching if you can get your hands on them.

I loved the movie Let the Right One In, but absolutely HATED the book...
