Alex: Kidnapping one worked out well for me. Just don’t get caught. What’s the one thing, besides Effie, that you can’t live without? Alex: That’d be two things. My horse and my Colt. “Darlin’.” His voice no longer held any strength. “Stop. Just gather up the supplies and get to town. Ride like the devil.”“Hush, Alex. I won’t leave you here to bleed to death!”“Effie, please go.”“No!” She doubled her efforts and was rewarded with the sound of ripping material. She wrapped strips around his wounds and tied them as tight as she could. Blood still seeped through. Effie fought against the panic rising in her.Alex needed help. Not a whimpering idiot. Effie bit her lips to stop the trembling. “Can you stand?”“Go, Effie. Just give me the rifle so I can guard your back.” His hand wavered as he reached for the weapon.She hugged the gun to her breast and swallowed her dread. “I’ll stay here and die by your side if you don’t try. Is that what you want? Now get up, damn it!” Effie struggled to help Alex stand. He leaned against the tree and swore.“Can you walk?” Terror squeezed her lungs.He curved his lips into a crooked smile. “Get the horses.”Effie ran. Fear clawed at her throat. Reins tight in her fist, she jogged back to Alex. Not a drop of color remained in his face. And he swayed drunkenly. She raced to his side and guided his boot into the stirrup. “I can’t lift you.”Alex sucked in a wheezy breath and hauled himself into the saddle. He sagged over the horn and wove bloody fingers through the horse’s mane. “Get going.”She scrambled onto her horse, bent to grab the trailing reins of Alex’s mount, and kicked her horse into a trot.“Don’t you dare die on me, Alex Marshall. I need you.”
