A Missed Shot

We jogged side by side until Tinker ran ahead of me into the trees.
A squirrel?
Then I heard a pop.
A gunshot?
Fear crept into my heart, but I plunged into the trees, knowing I'd do anything to safe my dog. I crawled through the forest debris, looking for something white. A tree branch sliced against my face, but I continued to crawl. Then I saw him, bumped up against a log.
He whimpered.
"I'm here," I said.
I grabbed him and rocked him in my arms until he stopped his shaking.
