Changes Coming Down (anthology story) released

I know I said I wasn't writing any more freebies for a bit. I have my books in existing series waiting for me to work on them. But here's another freebie. It wasn't my idea, honestly...

For those who are members of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, you may know that there are some book-reading games there. I've played Bingo, where teams read books for categories that fill up a bingo card. It's a lot of fun, a chance to be pushed to read that book about "sex with aliens" or "dystopian M/M" that you otherwise would never pick up.

Another game is the Scavenger Hunt (SH). I didn't play, but in that game, for the last six months, teams of readers chose books for their cover and contents, looking for a set of awarded points. So say, if you could read a book with a twin bed (2 points), flavored lube (2 points), an island (3 points), BDSM (1) and cowboys (1) - then your team could collect 9 points. It sounds like it was a lot of fun. (As someone who hates to be pulled out of a book while reading, I don't know if it's a good match for me. But it gathered a very enthusiastic group of players.)

Most of the games are run by a wonderful lady named Katie (Mistress of Merriment.) Other than about a week which she took off to have a baby, she's been tireless in helping us have reading fun all year. The Scavenger Hunt folks decided it would be nice to do a book for her, as a thank-you gift. It would be the holy grail of scavenger hunt books, the one with all the possible points in it. They decided to make it an anthology (because time-travelling, cross-dressing, paranormal cowboys with butt plugs, bacon-and-egg breakfasts, and mail... started to get silly. More about that later.)

One of the SH people suggested they could try to bring in a few extra authors, to round out the writing crew. They had two months to write the stories and compile them, if this was to be a New-Year's, end-of-the-game, congrats-on-the-baby gift. And someone, (Marc, I'm looking at you,) suggested I might do one.

Well, I'm impressed by everything Katie does, and then there was the challenge. They still needed to get a bunch of points into a story, like the major themes of Cowboys, and Sports, and Law Enforcement... all of which had to involve main characters. Plus a musical instrument, a mansion, sports equipment, an elevator... You see where this is going, right?

I said, "Hell, I can write a short story with all of those in the span of a month."

Except it turned out I couldn't. I could, however, write a 64K short novel about a sheriff (Casey), a cowboy (Will), and a hockey player (Scott), in less than a month. And title it, Changes Coming Down.

Changes Coming Down is my first published M/M/M story. It's about an established trio, coping with some upheavals in their lives. There's a bit of a mystery thread, and a little coming out drama. Plus the elevator, the mansion... I had fun writing it, and might even do a sequel someday. It's not fully polished, given the time frame, (and hockey fans - there's only a little actual hockey) but hopefully it will make a decent free read.

The anthology is titled Hunting Under Covers and is a free release from ARe books, Smashwords and Divergent Publishing where J. Vaughn did the production on the book. (Big thank-yous to J.!) Aimee Brissay, Kathleen Hayes, Shayla Mist, ME Sanford, and J. Vaughn (and Katies Crewman) contributed their six short stories, plus we created one group-round-robin get-everything-in effort of over-the-topness - Demons, Time Travel and Bacon, Oh My. (Where we found out just how silly cramming all the SH points in one short story could get. Well, we had to try, although I don't think we quite succeeded. It was fun.)

Despite the lightheartedness of the effort, all the stories other than the round robin are genuine M/M fiction. I think you'll enjoy reading them in this anthology. Maybe you'll find a new author you'll like. At least you may be cheerfully entertained. And now, back to our regularly scheduled writing...

Andrea I'm so glad you have a problem writing short stories! Thanks for the information on this anthology.

Kaje Harper LOL - my name is Kaje and I'm a word-o-holic. I hope you like it.

ttg What a super cool project! I'm looking forward to checking it out. :D

Kaje Harper It was a lot of fun. The round-robin story was a blast - I think I did three or four sections in that one (a bunch of people contributed to that, besides the short-story writers), and, um, yeah, it went unexpected places. And back again. With flavored lube. And demons.

Plus I've had an M/M/M set-up lurking in the plot-bunny cage so this was a nice change to set it free. I thought an established-trio story would let me go short, but nope. Not short. I hope you enjoy meeting Casey, Scott and Will.

I like the idea of an established trio. It means the whole focus of the story won't be on the getting together of the three, but what comes after. I think that's neat.

Kaje Harper Although it made me want to write the back-story LOL... and the sequel...

You and your ideas! One fire just alights the others. :) (Heeeeeey, isn't there some Hidden Wolves stories to work on??)

Don't mind me. I'm just an impatient, spoiled reader. I'll be good and not bother you...too much. :D I'm just glad you like these challenges. They've given us some great reads.

Kaje Harper First draft of Hidden Wolves 3 is done, but it needs a polish before submitting it. 125K, so it probably needs a bit of trimming too.

I like long stories, so no complaints from me. :) But sit and polish as much as you want. It's better to have something that you feel good about than feel rushed.

Jess Candela Yay, I've been looking forward to reading the final version of Changes Coming Down, and all the others!

I just wish I could read Hidden Wolves 3 for the current Bingo category. *pouts*

Also, if anyone wants some great hockey stories and doesn't mind MF (along with some MFM and MMF), I just read some great ones! The proofreading is terrible, and I'm trying to figure out how to out-of-the-blue email and volunteer to beta for the author, but the writing and characterization is so fantastic that they're worth reading even with the errors. And the BDSM, which is really not my thing, so that tells you how great the writing must be, LOL. Seriously, even with all that I may have a new favorite author...

message 11: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Wow - you'll have to let me know (I read M/F). And speaking as an author you emailed out of the blue, (mostly) - you volunteering to beta for me was one of the best things my writing received in the last 3 years. Let me know if you want a testimonial from a satisfied author.

message 12: by Jess (new)

Jess Candela Thanks, I may take you up on that offer of a testimonial, since I'm feeling so nervous! Or at least offer you as a reference, if you don't mind. It was much easier to email you, not just because we already had some contact, but also because - although I thought I had something to offer - I wasn't specifically critical of your books. Whereas in this case, no contact and I think the proofreading is so bad, it would've made me DNF if the writing were any less good. Trying to figure out how to diplomatically say, "I love your books, you're a talented writer with good editing but OMG you need a good proofreader! Let me help..." :)

As for the books, series is "The Dartmouth Cobras" by Bianca Sommerland. The first book, Game Misconduct, is free. That - and being in the mood for hockey romance - is the only reason I read it (BDSM and M/M/M/M/F not being my thing). I went into it expecting to DNF it, and instead got engrossed enough to finish it and check out the second. It is, in my opinion, the weakest of the series. So even if you don't love it, if you at least think the characterization is decent, it's worth checking out Book 2.

The second book, Defensive Zone, may be my favorite of the series, though Offside (Book 4) is close. The series is sort of Suz Brockmann-esque in that character story arcs continue over multiple books. So the trio I love so much from Book 2 has their story arc continue and get better and better through the subsequent books. The hockey elements ring mostly true, and it's great getting to be in a player's POV during a game. I can't wait for the next book... :)

Oh! Another thing you'll probably notice is she shares your predilection (and mine!) for sentence fragments starting with 'And' and 'But'. It's sometimes almost a bit much even for me, but it seems to work for her. I devoured the books, one right after another. And if there were more out, I'd still happily be reading them. Anyway, if you check the series out, I hope you love it as much as I do!

message 13: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper On my TBRs. And yeah, diplomacy. maybe you could just start with "there are a lot of typos" because that's hard to argue with and most of us know we're not catching them all.

message 14: by J. (new)

J. Vaughn I almost hate to share this, because I think I've found my own private goldmine, but Lioness7 (our talented cover artist for Hunting Under Cover) has been copyediting my books and she is amazing! She even catches extra spaces. She's not free, but very affordable and so worth it. Beta readers are great because they let you know where there's confusion and where you've just got it wrong or need to add something, but for final edits, I want a copyeditor.
Jess, sounds like you've got a talent for it. I'm not sure whether I could read the author you're recommending or not (I may check her out since the first one's free), but too many typos usually just pull me right out of the story.

Your long books are wonderful; the longer the better. I'm really looking forward to this one.

Kaje Harper Well, I'm sure it will still be long, since I never seem to shorten things much with edits, no matter how good my intentions... Thank you :)

message 17: by Sara (new)

Sara Winters This sounds interesting. Going to get it now.

Kaje Harper I hope you like it :)

I had fun with my first time writing M/M/M, even if it grew long. And the other stories are fun reads too.

J., too many typos usually pull me right out of the story too. That's why the incredulity with which I recommend this series - despite the typos, I kept reading anyway. The writing (IMO) was that good. Just think how good it'd be without the typos...

message 20: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper You need to help her - it's your duty as beta-reader extrordinaire.

I picked it up last night, thinking I'd just skim to see what changes you'd made since I last read it. Silly me! Your writing did what it always does, and pulled me in. Before I knew it, I was reading the whole thing. :D I love the changes you made, which solved my biggest issue with the story. I now love all three guys (pretty close to) equally. I did see a few little things I wish I'd caught previously, but I remind myself no one is perfect; not even (especially not, darnit) me.

I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the anthology. :)

message 22: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper That's why I don't reread, once something is out. There's always one more tweak... But I like it enough to put the prequel/sequel on my plot-bunny shelf. I hope you like the rest of them - quite varied to cover all the SH points.
