Scott Crellin created happy Christmas memories for dozens of families of autistic children last year when he pioneered a ”Sensitive Santa” program at Highpoint Shopping Centre.


The centre’s general manager knew from firsthand experience with his son Cooper, 6, that being told to sit on a strange man’s lap in a noisy shopping centre could cause great distress for autistic children, excluding them from a childhood rite of passage.


In his efforts to better understand Cooper’s condition Mr Crellin came across details of a ”Sensitive Santa” program in the US, which gave families the chance to book 20-minute appointments with a well-briefed Santa in a quiet environment before the shops opened.
