Monnik Giel en de friet

Er was in België heel wat te doen rond de jonge Giel, die op veertienjarige leeftijd naar het Tibetaanse Jonang-klooster in Indië wilde gaan. Er kwam een heel maatschappelijk onderzoek aan te pas en gesprekken met een psychologe, maar uiteindelijk mocht Giel dus vertrekken. Het deed me wat denken aan het verhaal van het Nederlandse meisje Laura Dekker die op erg jonge leeftijd een zeilreis rond de wereld wilde maken en uiteindelijk, ook na heel wat juridisch getouwtrek, haar gang mocht gaan. Misschien moeten wij als volwassenen soms eens durven toegeven dat wat jongeren zelf willen niet noodzakelijk slecht voor hen is. Nog een tip voor Giel: zwijg over de kwaliteit van de frieten in Indië, want dat komt hier een beetje raar over voor een overtuigde aspirant-monnik. Voor de rest: all the best en doe je collega's ginder de groeten!

Jonang Monastery at the age of fourteen. A social research took place and interviews with a psychologist, but Giel was eventually allowed to leave with the moral support of his mother. It reminded me of the story of the Dutch girl Laura Dekker, who wanted to make a sailing trip around the world at a very young age, and eventually, after some legal wrangling, she was allowed to leave. Maybe we adults have sometimes to admit that what young people want is not necessarily bad for them.
Another tip for Giel: don't talk on social media about the quality of the fries in India, it sounds a bit weird for a convinced aspiring monk.
