I Asked, You Answered
A couple of weeks ago I asked for your feedback about what I post here and what you’d like to see. A big thank you to everyone who responded!
You’ve given me some great ideas for future posts. In fact, next year (which isn’t as far away as it sounds!), I’ll be doing a 3-4 post series based on a suggestion that came in via the contact form.
The most shocking thing I learned: you all like cute cat videos. I know. I was surprised too.
I said that I was asking because I was taking a look at how often I should post here next year. That was 99% of the reason. The other 1%? Social networking sites like Facebook aren’t as effective at reaching people as they used to be.
You may not know this, but you’re probably not seeing most of the posts on Facebook pages you’ve liked. Before Facebook had to make money, most people who liked a page would see everything posted to that page. But now a page owner is lucky if 5-10% of fans see what they post. Some page owners are seeing numbers as low as 1-2%. Why? Because Facebook wants page owners to pay it to reach their fans.
I don’t mean to pick on Facebook. Any site can change the rules or close your account at any time. I believe that my time is best spent here, on a web property that I own. I make the rules, and as long as I renew the domain and continue to pay my host, nobody can take the site away from me. For that reason, I want it to be an interesting place to visit and follow, so I’m grateful to those of you who gave me input about what you like and don’t like, and what sorts of topics you’d like me to cover.
If you didn’t respond, I’d still love to hear from you if you have an opinion about what you’d like me to focus on. You can post a comment, or use the contact form.
At this point, I’m planning to continue my every Friday posting schedule. I might relax that during the summer, and I’ll probably miss the odd Friday, as I did this year. But for the most part, I’ll be here on Fridays.
We’re less than a week away from Christmas. Miracles do happen, because I’ve finished my Christmas shopping, so I’m in a pretty relaxed mood. My partner will be off most of next week and the following one. We’ll do a lot of socializing and eat way too much chocolate, and hopefully squeeze in some quiet time. If you celebrate Christmas, I wish you a very Merry Christmas. If you don’t, I wish you a Happy Holiday Season.
I’ll leave you with one of the videos in my “Favourite YouTube Videos” folder (yes, I have one). I want to make it clear that dogs can be cute, too. I don’t discriminate here. Watch the video to the end. It’s short.
I probably won’t post next Friday, so I’ll see you next year. I’ll start the year by reminding you about the Canadian Spot-On at the Virtual Living Room.
I wish you all the best for 2014. :)
