Thanks to an elderly spinster sleuth and her ingenious cat, Christopher Holmes has enjoyed a celebrated career as a bestselling mystery writer. Until now. Sales are down and his new editor is allergic to geriatric gumshoes.
On the advice of his agent, he reinvents his fortyish, frumpy, recently dumped self into the sleek, sexy image of a literary lion, and heads for a Northern California writers conference to try and resurrect his career. A career nearly as dead as the body he stumbles over in the woods.
In a weirdly déjà vu replay of one of his own novels, he finds himself stranded in an isolated lodge full of frightened women—and not a lawman in sight. Except for J.X. Moriarity, former cop and bestselling novelist. The man with whom he shared a one-night stand—okay, maybe three—long ago. The man who wants to arrest him for murder.
A ruthless, stalking killer, or a hot, handsome ex-lover. Which poses the greater danger? It’s elementary, my dear Holmes!

Okay, so if you told me a few months ago that I would read and absolutely adore an M/M romance mystery I would probably believe you but I would still be skeptical having not read anything in the genre and heard both positives and negatives from friends and bloggers. Now here is the thing, I expected some nice fluff, clichés and a few provocative scenes. Instead I got a fantastic story with depth, just the right amount of sarcasm, a phenomenally written and very strongly developed inner voice and on top of all of that it happened to be a great mystery. Not the kind where you have figured it out two chapters in or where you aren’t give enough info but instead the kind where, as in reality, you realize that just about anyone can have a fairly good reason to kill someone else under the right circumstances.
This novel is even more of a hoot to authors because the main character happens to be an author on his way to a retreat. An author who is not normally the most social person and understands many of the odd quirks the publishing industry has. The sarcastic comments about the authors he ends up surrounded by alone had me in stitches. One of my closest friends was the one to not only suggest the book but listen to it on audio with me while we adventured around New York City. I kid you not we probably ended up having an entire subway cart and a bus load of Book Expo America attendees staring at us when we burst out laughing. I am pretty sure this book made me cry I was laughing so hard more than once.
One of my biggest compliments to this book is that the character has a really honest inner voice that is very believable, real and well developed. He isn’t your average hero which made me love him even more. It isn’t every day I read about an aging author who is approx. 40 and somehow manage to really be able to relate to him.
Overall and amazing 5 star read! Highly suggested to anyone interested in trying out the genre or any authors wanting to read a really well developed inner voice that brings a story to life and keeps you turning the pages.
