The 18th century map of the Philippines by Murillo Velarde, engraved by Nicolas...

The 18th century map of the Philippines by Murillo Velarde, engraved by Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay, shows Francis Xavier close to Mindanao because it was once believed he visited the Philippines. You will also see a crab carrying a cross that documents a miracle where Xavier calmed a storm by tossing his crucifix into the turbulent sea. When he stepped ashore a crab came out of the depths and returned his crucifix. Crab was not eaten that day and was blessed by the thankful Xavier. In GenSan I was served a crab marked by a cross on its shell and was told it was a descendant of the pious crab that returned Xavier's cross. More in my Inquirer column on Wednesday.
