Your Fave Is Problematic: Because some people don't have enough to complain about.
Problematic shit your favorite celebrities have done
So we live in a society that is radically changing towards being more sensitive towards non-white cultures. Thank you. That’s fantastic. That’s what we need, diversity, a cultural melting pot, an appreciation for things that are not just what we consider “normal” without mockery.
About half of the listing on this site are about appropriation, right down to Nicki Minaj (who I can’t stand, btw) having an “appropriated” tattoo in kanji running down her arm.
Bitch, what?
And then there’s cries of Katy Perry being “racist” for dressing in a Geisha outfit, and racism for this manner of dress, racism for that manner of dress, etc etc etc, and it just gets me thinking that it’s almost a reverse line of racism. Like You can only dress up as a part of a culture that is your own. You must stick to the designated fashion lines as dictated by your culture, and yours alone, or you are racist. I get it when it’s Halloween costumes that egregious mock different cultures for humor; I get that. That’s wrong. But what I don’t get it when people appreciate the styles and fashions of other cultures and reflect that in their garb, tattoos, or hair. If that’s true, half of Japan is about to get hit with the racism hammer, because it’s a stylistic choice to emulate fashions from other cultures there, quite a bit of it American culture. And it’s fantastic! It shows passion! It shows fantastic joy in the style they choose! Some of it goes a little overboard, but that can be applied to anything. Too many cheeseburgers are bad for you. Too much candy is bad for you. Wearing blackface is bad for you. Wearing a style of clothing that is generally considered “urban” isn’t.
I can understand how people who have been following my blog for a while might be surprised that I’m writing this — I’m a huge, huge proponent of equalism. We’re all equal; we’re all just human beings, of different cultures and places and styles. We’re all just trying to make sense of this shit, and we all sometimes make mistakes and do things that are stupid. I don’t tolerate racism or sexism. I just don’t. There’s no sense to it. But to say that it’s okay for a man to dress up in women’s clothing but not in Japanese clothing is silly. Style and fashion are things that have influenced us all across the globe for centuries. It spreads, it catches, it’s about art and ideas and things we find passion or joy it. Because when a man decides that, for himself, he wants to wear “traditionally” women’s clothing, that is okay, and it SHOULD be okay. You can wear whatever the damn hell you want to. As long as it’s your own culture.
We are a massive, massive globe filled with billions of people, so no two people are going to dress exactly the same when faced with the multitudes of inspirations presented to them thanks to the miracle of the internet. Wear whatever the fuck you want to wear. Respect where it came from. Respect yourself. And wear whatever the fuck you want to wear.
