Jesus said, "A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time" (Luke 20:9).
Something has always fascinated me about these parables. Where is
the man going, and why? We're not told anything about it.
Apparently I've been thinking about this for a long time, since I wrote about it in the
Antique Blog on November 18, 1990. I still wonder if there might be some mystery here, something more than a pretext for framing the story. Here's what I wrote on that day, 23 years ago:
