In Pere Lachaise Cemetery (featured in Lockhart’s novel Daddy’s Girls) on the eastern end of Paris, one of the more elaborate tombs contains Heloise and Abelard, the most celebrated lovers in the history of this romantic country. Pierre Abelard was a well-respected 12th-century philosophy teacher who found himself castrated by Heloise’s father after eloping with the girl. It took 500 years and the dawn of the 19th century Romantic Movement to finally bring the pair back together here in this monument.
Go here for a tour of this ancient and famously odd cemetery.
