REVIEW: Once Written, Twice Shy (The Broken Men Chronicles) By Carey Decevito
4 stars
Carey Decevito
So, call me dumb, considering the clue is in the series title - Broken Men Chronicles- but only when I read the first page of the novel, did I realize this was in the male POV. Yeah, stupid of me or what? Although, I have to say it was a pleasant surprise. There aren’t many romance novels with the man’s perspective and I really enjoyed that change in direction.
I think we, women tend to believe men are about as emotional as old socks, so… The fact that the central character isn’t, is really great to read. Paxton is a well-drawn, emotional character who really feels the loss of his marriage.
If I’m honest, I wouldn’t say that he was broken, not that I’d want him to be. His divorce does affect him but he’s ready to live again.
I think for him to be broken, Carey would have had to really go into the aftermath of Paxton’s divorce and the heavy details into his ex’s adultery, but as that wasn’t the zenith of the story, I guess that would have been pointless. The future is the center of the story and all the surprises it holds. :)
As a reader, you don’t feel the rest of the characters like you do Paxton and I don’t mean that as a criticism. I think this is how it should be. It’s Paxton who makes you read on and it’s for Paxton’s sake that you root for him and hope against hope for a HEA for him. :) I won’t say if he attains the ultimate in the romance genre… that’s for you to read. ;)
All in all, a very enjoyable read. I’d recommend it.
