Begin in Darkness

Dreams always begin in darkness
moving towards the uncertain light.
We begin in darkness too, suddenly
learning all about the unexpected brightness.

Our beginning is lost to us, down back
along the twisting cords of history
to that beginning in new clarity
where we fall into a sharp new world.

But now we know too much about
the inevitable end that falls towards us
out of a tunnel of narrowing possibility,
until all we can do is stare into that final night.
