malrubius Voted for Emperor. I couldn't finish Ocean at the End of the Lane. Didn't read any of the others. Should I? I usually confine my fantasy reading to first-person novels.

message 2: by Mark (last edited Nov 05, 2013 01:19PM) (new)

Mark Lawrence Many thanks - very much appreciated!

I've only read The Daylight War (& previous 2 books) which was very good & got my vote.

message 3: by Glen (new)

Glen Cross I feel dirty.I voted for EOT ....but I'm a massive Brett fan(as in I have a ward tattoo). I just really enjoyed Emperor. IMMENSELY. Good luck! Its more than deserved.

message 4: by Kyle (new)

Kyle Sisco Got a vote from me!

message 5: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence Thanks Glen, much appreciated - I'm sure I need your vote more than Peat but there would be no hard feelings whatsoever if you'd voted for The Daylight War (or any other book) :)

message 6: by Eirik (new)

Eirik Voted!

message 7: by Glen (new)

Glen Cross Ha ha. Yeah I read my comment again and it seemed a bit wierd in the beginning :-) The Broken Empire Trilogy inspired me massively. EOT all the way.

message 8: by Chris (new)

Chris If EoT doesn't win, i'll raise a 9 nation army and march on Goodreads HQ!

message 9: by Cian (new)

Cian Goggin Already gave EOT my vote, would have thought it would have been higher!!

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

I voted for Emperor of Thorns why is it not higher than that?

message 11: by Mark (last edited Nov 08, 2013 04:41AM) (new)

Mark Lawrence Those aren't the votes but the ratings on the book. The votes will be related in some way though.

Emperor of Thorns has fewer ratings than 7 other fantasy books out this year, partly because it came out later than many, but mostly because Neil Gaiman and Robert Jordan are much much more popular than me (and the rest of them) :D

message 12: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Dubief Voted.

So maybe you should be asking all of us to rate/review your book?

message 13: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence I'm always asking people that :) Ratings, reviews, recommendations, telling a friend... all of them are the lifeblood of a book. Without that it will fade and die.

message 14: by Tobi (last edited Nov 08, 2013 10:12AM) (new)

Tobi I really liked the first two books in the series (I even gave the first one away to my buddy for christmas '12 to buy the English version, the former one was German), but I haven't had time to read "Emperor of Thorns" yet.

Therefore I voted for Scott Lynch's "Republic of Thieves", until now my favourite book this fall. Nevertheless good luck in this contest, the series would certainly deserve a good result.

[edit]
Oh, and love your infographics :D

message 15: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence The slightly disheartening statistic is that I have 864 friends on Goodreads and only 67 of them have voted on the Goodreads Choice Award:

https://www.goodreads.com/choiceaward...

And not all of _them_ voted for Emperor of Thorns...

message 16: by Alexis (new)

Alexis Dubief Is it helpful or am I being annoying by pointing out that 7% is actually an awesome response rate to your request to vote? It's actually probably an amazing response rate given that many of that 864 are probably people like me a la - those who aren't big on Goodreads.

Plus popularity contests such as these are always going to favor the establishment. Gaiman (who I also adore) is almost unbeatable. Not because it's necessarily the best book on the list, but he's the most established author.

Don't worry. When your books get picked up by HBO (please let this happen because it would be just sooooo awesome) and you are a household name like RR Martin, you too will be crushing the popularity contests!

message 17: by Nerine (new)

Nerine Dorman I had to um and ah. LOVED Gaiman's novel but reckon you deserved my vote more.

message 18: by Ted (new)

Ted Just bought Emperor of Thorns! ; )

message 19: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence Very many thanks for all the votes - much appreciated.

It's now round 2 and you can vote again. The list has 5 more nominees (written in) and this vote decides which 10 make it to the finals in a few days.

message 20: by Glen (new)

Glen Cross Done. Really hope EOT gets to finals.

message 21: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence Thanks, Glen!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Voted again in the finals - fingers crossed for EOT, but the competition's heavy this year.

message 23: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence Yup - it would be a MAJOR success to get into the top 5.

Many thanks for the votes.

message 24: by Riccardo (new)

Riccardo M. Voted in the finals. I hope this book will win :)

message 25: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence Thanks! With about 1 million books published in English each year just being top 10 in one of 20 categories feels like a win :)
