Capri's Fate - Writer's Notes - part 3

Why I wrote Capris Fate like I did.
When I wrote Capri's Fate I – deliberately - broke a couple of rules of writing – heck – I probably broke a lot :-). Why? I don't like being hemmed in. In a university course on creativity, my professor droned on about how a person had to free their mind – let the creativity flow – experiment – yadda, yadda, yadda. He pointed out - some of the results will be wonderful, some will need work and some will be pure garbage. Amazingly enough, his lecture seems to have stuck in the back of my head.
So what did I experiment on? What sacred rule did I break? POV. Hear those gasps of horror. I wrote Capri's Fate in 2 POVs. Two different POVs.
You're thinking – heroine and hero's POV – so what? No – that would be too easy. I wrote Capri's Fate in first person and third person.
Why? Because I wanted to get inside Capri and Thall's heads and let the reader know who they are and then I wanted to pull back a bit and let the reader enjoy the ride of watching these two struggle to fall in love.
Didn't anybody protest? Yes. My cps pointed it out. My betas. And my editor. But ultimately the story is mine. If this works - yay! If it doesn't - lesson learned.
Sure – I could have written the whole book in one POV – but that's been done – a billion times and I wanted to experiment.
All of this has led to my new motto - If someone doesn't step out of the box once in a while, it's gonna get really crowded in there.
Excerpt 1 Capri POV – 1st person
"Well, let's try lingerie. I have this gorgeous red bustier, with…" Patsy poked her fingers through the bra part. "With the playfulness of being a peek-a-boo."Something—someone?—nudged my arm. Of its own accord, my hand reached out and my fingers grabbed the bustier out of Patsy's grip. I had always wanted one of these. To me, it symbolized a sexual tigress. A woman who can strut into a room and capture every man's attention. Of course not me. Not in a hundred years."I have this regal blue one." Pasty held it out. "It matches your eyes." I didn't hand the red one back to her. I couldn't. Red's my favorite color.
She shrugged and moved on. I followed clutching the bustier as if I'd just won the Best Actress Oscar.Excerpt 2 – Thall POV – 1st person
A wisp of a breeze tickled my nose with the sweet aroma of gardenia. I'm home. And free of that infernal human body with its itches and swellings. Reaching out with my mind, I searched for Capri. It was late evening where she existed. She’d be asleep. Shifting to her bedroom, I hovered beside her bed, listening to her breathing. It was shallow and slow.Look at her. So stunning. So magnificent. A human woman full of passion and a deep ability to love. I swirled above reveling in the scent of her being and the warmth of her body.Excerpt 3 – The Romance – 3rd person
Capri slipped into the seat and cast her gaze over the numerous dials, switches and display screens. "Oh, wow. Probably should be able to think of something more intelligent but…" She shook her head. "Look at all the electronics.""Flying 101. This is the throttle." He gripped his hand around it. "Think of it as the gas pedal." He placed his hands on the metal object in front of them. "This is the steering wheel of the plane. And see this." He pointed to a small screen in front of him, blue on the top and brown on the bottom. "When it is level like that, life is good."Capri waved her hand at the other devices. "What about all these?""Haven't the foggiest?""Pardon?" She laughed. "You are not instilling confidence in your passenger here.""Well then, my telling you that I only got to chapter two in Flying for Dummies is probably not a good thing?" His eyes twinkled with delight.

So - confession time - have you ever deliberately broken a rule of writing?
