Readers Speak

Do you read the forums on Amazon? There's a very interesting discussion about the democatization of the slush pile. I love that it's contrary to all the "doom & gloom" that the press is predicting over the rise of self- and small-publishing. The actual readers are saying, yes! Give us a sample and we're happy to try an indie rather than whatever Big Publishing wants to stuff down our throats.

Here's the thread!

And by the way, Sleepwalker is doing unexpectedly well over there on ol' Amazon! YAY!

Leslie Nicoll Jordan, we have a similar discussion underway at KindleBoards. Same conclusion from the readers--yes! give us samples! We have brains and know what we like. LOL.

Jordan Price Leslie, isn't that super-awesome? It makes me so happy to think we have choices. Have you seen the doom n' gloom from the press where they're predicting that all readers will have to wade through endless seas of dreck if their gatekeepers are all gone? Methinks they're scared of the old regime changing!

I can't tell you how HEARTENING it is for me to hear that readers want to decide for themselves what to read! YAY!

Jordan Price Nothing like being told we're not intelligent enough to choose our own reading material, huh? ;-)

The article that inspired the thread said readers would "burn out" on the act of wading through the slush pile.

Jordan Price Ahem, preaching to the choir.
Ha ha, I know it. But it just feels so good to be right sometimes.

I think you're the third person TODAY to mention PsyCop 6 to me on the tail end of a communication about something else entirely. I'm sensing a pattern here ;-)

Ha ha, the walk and chew gum part was good.

I think the pro-gatekeeper doomsday predictors are quick to assume authors who self-publish are rejected newbies. Many of us, myself included, have other publishing options available to us. We just have reasons for wanting to do it our own way.
