What Samhain Means to Me
Samhain (pronounced: SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) is the end of summer. It’s one of the biggest celebrations in the Pagan faiths.
Samhain typically is on November 1. Many begin their celebrating on All Hallow’s Eve which is October 31.
Big cities usually throw big celebrations in the parks where thousands of witches gather from all over the world. (New York is infamous for their Samhain gathering)
During Samhain, the veil between the physical world and the spirit world thins. It’s a typical practice among Pagan households to set an extra place setting out to welcome whatever deceased family member decides to call.
It’s also a time where the abilities of witches are said to be at their strongest.
Jack O’ Lanterns and the such are placed outside doors to ward off demons and evil spirits who want to cause harm. They weren’t always made out of pumpkins. Because of the practice’s origins they used to be made out of turnips.
Samhain is my favorite holiday of the 8 Sabbats. Aside from taking the little ones to get their candy fix, I love casting a circle and getting reuniting with the ones I’ve lost over the years. I really hope we get to cast a circle this year. We didn’t get to last year and it really didn’t seem like Samhain without it being done.
Samhain really is a family holiday. I eagerly look forward to hearing from my dearly departed.
I wish you all Pagan and non Pagan alike a year of love and light >^.^<
