Similar to a rain garden but on a larger scale, a bioswale is designed to capture and clean stormwater. Only instead of trapping it, it channels it along a preset course into a collection pool.

This has several advantages over gutters. The first is that the plants and trees slow the flow of water to prevent erosion; the second is that the plants and their soil/gravel matrix filter out particulates and pollutants before the water reaches the pool; the third is that the plants and microorganisms breakdown the pollutants; and fourth some of the water can penetrate the soil to recharge the water table. Additionally, the bioswale needs little irrigation except during droughts.
