I once heard author Eleanor Brown give a talk about her book, The Weird Sisters, during which she said that every family has its own language, its own sort of shorthand, for communicating with each other. For the family in The Weird Sisters that shorthand was Shakespeare.  Growing up in my family, the language was twofold: part obscure movie and television quotes, and part family lore.
