"Here's the tree... the big pecan there." When Mandy pointed out the large hole, she grimaced. "I didn't remember it being that high. Maybe if you lift me I can reach it."
His gaze became appraising as he looked her up and down. "How's your balance?"
"Oh, poo, you're making this sound harder than it is," she scolded as she lifted her hands to his shoulders. "Boost me up."
After a slight hesitation, he shrugged in acquiescence. Lacing his fingers together, he made a stirrup for her foot. "Up you go."
When she stepped into his hands, he catapulted her up until her knees were level with his shoulders. She sucked in a frightened cry, grabbing the tree trunk to keep from toppling backward. Unknowingly she pressed her thigh into his face.
A muffled sound came from Rule's throat. Mandy lurched away, embarrassed, causing him to lose his hold on her foot. With lightning reflexes, he grabbed her hips, keeping her from falling, but Mandy flailed out blindly. Her arms curled around his head, crushing her breasts against his mouth.
"I don't think this is working," she squeaked, clutching for dear life. "Why would you think that?" he muttered into her breasts, sounding edgy.
She could feel the roughness of his jaw through her blouse, his breath moist against her breasts. She wriggled in his arms, shifting her hands to press down on his shoulders. "Raise me up. I can stand on your shoulders."
"Try not to fall backward this time."
"I won't," she cried morosely, embarrassed to her core. "Just do it!"
With a grunt and a powerful thrust, Rule lifted her high enough so that she could get her sneakers balanced on his shoulders. He grabbed her ankles to steady her as she got a firm hold on the tree.
She bent to look into the hole. While scanning the darkness inside, she wondered grudgingly if he could have boosted her all the way in the first place.
"Are you okay?" He sounded hoarse.
"I guess. What about you? Did you strain anything?"
He muttered something she couldn't hear.
"What?" "I'll survive," he grumbled. "Just look in the hole." "Okay, okay." She rummaged around. "Nothing but acorns... and a deserted nest."
"No fifty-million-dollar bills?" he asked, feeling uncharacteristically irritable. That scent of hers clung to every inch of her, and it tormented him. He had a foolish urge to nuzzle the calf that kept brushing against his hair.
"Oh, did I forget to mention the bills?" She picked up a handful of acorns and dropped them on his head in peevish glee. "That should teach you to manhandle me." "Ouch. Is that the thanks I get for saving your bacon?" He squelched his mounting desires, moving slightly to relieve the painful pressure their unintentional intimate contact had produced in his jeans. His actions elicited a squeal from her.
"Don't move!" she cried, snagging the tree again. "Rule Danforth, you have an ugly streak of sadism in you."
"I have an ugly streak of sadism, she says." His mumbled response was ripe with dark overtones.
