A Review of The Princess and the Castle: A Fairytale by Virginia Wright

VIRGINIA WRIGHT is the author of five books.  She is also an illustrator, food and nature photographer, blogger, recipe developer, and says she is the “self-appointed Queen of recipe adaptation.” When she is not tending her  organic herb garden, taking photographs, sifting through recipes, cooking,  or spending time with her husband, she is doing what she loves doing  most…writing!

Ever since I ran my epic book review/interview with Virginia (click here if you missed it!)  I have been keen to read some more of her books.  I may not have been your typical “girlie” girl when growing up however I have always had a soft spot for all things pink and “princessy” so The Princess and the Castle which has not only been written by Virginia but also illustrated by her was a logical place to start, okay, so the cover might be blue and yes, some boys might also like it, but hey, it’s about a princess!

Beautifully illustrated, I feel that this book would be perfect for young children from about about the age of 3-6.  Short enough to be read in it’s entirety at bedtime but long enough to make inquisitive little minds think, this story is not only highly educational but fun! I love the way basic mathematics is seamlessly introduced into the story and also thought the weaving in and subsequent sounding out of Kanchipuram (can chee poor rum) which we learn is “a real city in the country, India” was a lovely touch.

I honestly haven’t got a single, negative thing to say about this book and would have no hesitation in recommending it to parents of young children.
