M.R. Well, Merit's a Chicago gal and she's from money and Oak Park -- so I'd bet she'd show it and give the Big Apple a razzberry by wearing a homegirl's design. Presumably, Mrs. Merit has taste and our Merit grew up surrounded by it; and I'd also bet that Project runway is one of Merit's secret guilty pleaures. Since this is a high-fashion affair in NYC, I'd expect Ethan to have sent Merit off to someone like Maria Pinto for the chic daytime suit and evening ball gown, in Cadogan black of course with color accents (hey, if Ms. Pinto's good enough for Michelle Obama, she's good enough for Merit -- and New York).

As for the 'day at the office' wear, Merit herself doesn't have an unlimited budget, but I'll bet she knows about the annual fashion show by Art Institute of Chicago fashion students and she's tracked a few of the graduates. She'd buy her simple but stylish 'office' wear from one of the young, up-and-coming AIC designers. Possibly more somethings in butter-soft leather, but not limited to that. No hip-hop 'designers' or tacky sports things for Merit! And the point of wearing Chicago designers in New York is to remind the Big Apple that it isn't the be-all and end-all of the planet. Which I'm sure would suit Ethan politically just fine. **There's** mud in your eye, Manhattan!
