Let's all welcome
Matthew Stillman, Genesis Deflowered
Tell us some things about yourself.1. Born and bred New York City kid – born in an apartment on the East Village. Raised in an occult bookstore. Now lives in Harlem.2. Used to develop programming for Food Network (a cable network in the US)3. I conceived of, wrote the treatment for and co-produced my first (and at this point only) film called “The End of Poverty?” about the origins of poverty and why it persists in a world with so much wealth. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and went to 40 festivals around the world. I spoke at the UN four times about the film and its ideas.4. Since 2009 I have regularly been sitting in Union Square in New York City with two folding chairs and a table with a sign reading “Creative Approaches To What You Have Been Thinking About” and a smaller one that reads “Pay What You Like or Take What You Need”. I've spoken with over 3000 people helping them look at all sorts of issues in creative ways.5. I am training to become a Crossfit trainer6. I have been studying and performing long form improvisational comedy since 1996.
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was there a moment when you first thought "I'm a writer."? I actually don't identify as a writer. I happen to write quite a lot. But writing is just something I do – it isn't who I am. Some people love to write and treasure their time with the words and the page. Broadly speaking, that isn't me. I am more excited by the ideas and usefulness of what I write about and the writing itself is just the process I need to work with to get those ideas out.
What genre(s) do you write in? I suppose what I write most about is personal development in various forms. But “Genesis Deflowered” is my first work of interpretive fiction...or what I am calling “Biblical Erotica”
Have many books have you written? List names of published books?“Genesis Deflowered” is my first full length book.
What's Genesis Deflowered about? In “Genesis Deflowered” I have taken the King James Bible's version of Genesis and added text to it to explore the erotic spaces that are hinted at but never really explored in Genesis. But the text I have added is written in that poetic and chaste Elizabethan/Jacobean style.Essentially I have turned Genesis into an erotic novel. All the stories we all know are there and in tact.So the book is about the creation of the world, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Ark, the Tower of Babel, Abraham, Jacob, Isaac, Rachel, Rebecca, Joseph and dozens of other characters and their very human erotic lives.
What is your favourite moment in the story (one that doesn’t give away any secrets) There are so many fascinating and complicated relationships in Genesis but Isaac truly has a pure love for Rebecca. The night they consummate their relationship is actually very touching and I think it stands out among all of the many sex scenes.
Have any of your characters ever been based on people you knew from real life? Not that I know of!
Short question time.Favourite ice cream – shocker – I actually don't like ice cream, actually. I'd rather food than dessert any day of the week.
Dream vacation – Last summer I went to Asturias in the North of Spain. I'd go back there in a second. But give me northern Italy and give me...oh, just give me travel.
Least favourite food – anything that comes in a box with an ingredient list longer than four items.
What super power would you like to be granted. Why? When I was a kid I was a big comic book fan. Cypher (a member of the New Mutants) was one of my favorites and I was really sad when he was killed off. His power was a perfect understanding of any language – written, spoken, animal, alien etc. He could not only understand and communicate that language, he could communicate at the highest level.I'd want that one.

There are hundreds of sex acts implied in the first book of the bible. How has nobody ever described how each of them would have played out in biblical language? If the writers and translators of the Bible had been a little less prudish we might have an entirely different relationship between sex and religion than we have now. In Genesis there is sex before marriage, threesomes, incest, group sex, kinky fetish cuckolding, gay sex and more. Isn't it time that you read the Bible for the dirty parts?
Using the seminal King James Bible in its Elizabethan English as spring board,"Genesis Deflowered" makes the beginning of the Bible come out as a sexy, readable and fun erotic novel.
ExcerptAnd Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And Sarai sent Hagar to Abram with gladness, and spied upon their tent as Abram knew Hagar.
And Abram went in unto Hagar, and ate of her fruit. Abram rejoiced with glad tidings in the breasts of Hagar; for he had longed for her newness. And Hagar in her newness hungered for Abram like a calf for milk. The secret ways of the Egyptians were known by Hagar; and her thighs did tell of those secrets. And as she spied upon the secrets that Hagar knew in the dark tent, the waters of Sarai gently ran; and her breast was of fire. But the secrets vexed her; and she craved to know, and to see them clearly. And Abram anointed his pillar, so that it might support the temple of Hagar. And his pillar did bow at the jewel at the temple gate; and his oil did spill. And Hagar tasted of his oil, but kept the sacrifice for her self; and Hagar was full of hope. And, lo, she conceived. And when Hagar saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes; for Hagar wanted Abram for herself alone. And Sarai knew this, and said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee; for I only desire to be treasured by thee, and the LORD alone. But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And Sarai said to Abram that Hagar the Egyptian had sworn an oath to her, and had forgotten it for she hadst seen Hagar taste what was not to be tasted.
