Cuckoo's Egg, by C.J. Cherryh; DAW Books 1985.
This is a strange book, but one that I've always been very fond of, and that I've read over and over -- partly just for the pleasure of the reading, and partly in an attempt to figure out some parts of it that mystify me. I recommend it enthusiastically.
