Aliens: Slobbering Geniuses.
Here’s something that drives me nuts: Aliens that have mastered technology, have built starships, have traveled all across the galaxy, and yet they run around naked, slobbering on themselves, with zero communication skills. What’s up with that?

To get the citizenry to believe in their manifesto "To Serve Man?"
That's just 'their way.' Don't judge. I'm sure they don't appreciate the way we go around exhaling poisonous gas and babbling incessantly. Compared to the naked, drooling, nonverbal aliens, humans are just downright rude.
Covering up their skin, eating in public, showing their fur, peering at other people's planets with telescopes...
Serious answer? The pulp of the 30s rolled up many of our fears into stories and sold them...
