Every year in June, a brave group of daredevils in the city of Alesund, Norway stack up hundreds of wood pallets to a height of over 130 feet, which they then light on fire in celebration of Midsummer and John the Baptist’s birthday.

Norway: where they build monuments and burn them because metal.

Jenny Lynn They do something similar in Shetland called Up Helly Aa, though it involves burning a Viking longship rather than a bunch of jenga blocks. But it's pretty frickin' amazing to watch.

Jenny Lynn It happens on the last weekend in January so it's super cold (though not as bad as I thought it would be considering where Shetland is located), but it's also awesome to watch. There's just dudes everywhere in Viking costumes and other silly dress carrying torches through Lerwick. And after they fire up the ship, you can go to one of the halls and drink and eat and dance and watch funny pantos all night long (seriously all night long. We didn't leave until around 9 a.m.). Of course, you have to buy tickets to go to the hall, but it's worth it. Just reserve the day after for sleeping and not traveling back to regular Scotland. I speak from experience.
