A Matter of Obedience

Hubby and I adopted a German Shepherd from an animal shelter a few months ago, and have been engaged in a battle ever since.

Bottom Line: We want Maggie to obey; she doesn't want to.

While some of our desire for her obedience are selfish on our part, most of our commands are for her welfare. I don't want her to tug so hard on the leash that it damages her throat. I don't want her to get into fights with other dogs. I don't want her to chase cars.

In other words, it's vitally important for her to obey what we say when we say it.

The same is true for us and our relationship to God. The requirements He has for us are for our benefit. But all too often, we rush in where angels fear to tread without giving what God wants even a moment's consideration.

I'm slowly--and unfortunately, I do mean slowly--learning that in every situation and circumstance, I need to take the time to seek God's direction. When I follow this scenario, the outcome is good. When I don't, it's disastrous.

It's easy to think that we know best, that it's not that big of a deal, that it really doesn't matter. But we don't know best, it can be a big deal, and it really does matter. Our walk with God is not only a matter of faith, it's also a matter of obedience, for in our obedience we prove our love for Him and our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. ~1 John 5:1-4

Father God, thank You for loving us enough to have expectations and boundaries for us. Help us to recognize that these requirements are for our good and for the benefit of Your kingdom. May we be quick to seek Your guidance in every decision--even what we consider the little decisions. Thank You that You are available in every situation to offer Your guidance and wisdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
