Some years ago, I was contacted by an attorney and asked to evaluate his client, the plaintiff in a lawsuit. I’ll call her Mrs. Jones, a 35-year-old widow, who was suing a funeral home.


A year earlier, her presumably healthy 40-year-old husband, died suddenly of a massive heart attack while at the gym.

Susanne Leist Mrs. Jones actually stepped out of her proverbial box to face her fears head-on. Even though the court trial didn't end in her favor, it might have helped her heal emotionally. I believe that it is always better to face your internal demons and not allow them time to grow and fester.

Mark Rubinstein Very true, Suzanne. She probably did what she hoped would be in her best interest--look at her husband's body. Unfortunately, the unexpected sight she encountered caused other emotional difficulties.

Susanne Leist If that was true, then how could someone face his or her fears without causing new ones?
