PART 1: MY DISRUPTIVE HEROES
“My favorite heroes do my favorite type of disruption, which is reimagination boundaries. Dr. Seuss created a whole new way of learning that was both fun and educational. Muhammad Yunus started Grameen Bank and won the Nobel Peace Prize for coming up with the concept of micro-lending and showing the world that you can actually combine good business with doing good, and that the two are not mutually exclusive.
“A personal hero for me: I was taking a trans-Atlantic flight and I was struck by this very small but incredibly energetic older woman, 81 years old. We struck up a conversation. She was going to Amsterdam, where she’d get on another plane to Africa, where she’d take a five-hour ride on a horse-cart to get to where she was going.
“When she was 67, when most people think about retirement, she completely changed her focus after having me a boy from Ghana, and she discovered how much help Ghana needed. So for 14 years she made it her life mission, she set up five orphages, she has set up the only healthcare facility that serves 40,000 people, she has set up various farming entities that help people feed themselves, and her charity organization is 100% pass-through — she keeps nothing for herself.
“And when people in companies say to me ‘How do we reimagine boundaries?’ people like that are a complete inspiration. It’s all about your frame of mind. Anyone at any time in their lives or in their business evolution is about to overstep perceived boundaries and reimagine what they do, if they so choose.”
