 day6

Miles stopped her at the doors leading into the dining hall. A boy who looked no more than ten smiled brightly to her as he picked up a large trumpet and opened the doors just enough for him to slip through.

From where she stood, the boy’s trumpet blaring sounded a bit muffled, his voice was muffled as well, though she still vaguely heard him announce, “Presenting Ember of Caprae.”

The guard pushed open the doors and she took in the six pairs of eyes directed at her. A set of cold sapphire ones caused her breath to catch in her throat.

“Are you alright?” Miles whispered from his post.

Ember nodded absently, her gaze had not left those familiar sapphire depths. “Yes.”

As if in a trance, she walked down the stairs into the dining hall. Her heart hammered so loud in her chest, she was certain everyone present could see it. The sapphire gaze dropped to her neck where the pendant she wore offered a soft blue glow.

AleXander stood up and offered his hand as Ember’s satin slippered feet touched the floor.  She placed her hand daintily in his and offered him a smile.

AleXander leaned down as if to kiss her cheek. Instead he hissed low into her ear. “My traitorous sister told me about you and the wolf. I thought it only fitting he should be the first to know how in love we are.”

If possible, Ember’s face turned even paler as she listened to his words. She knew those eyes looked familiar. She chanced a glance toward the owner of those depths that were etched into her mind’s eyes and gasped. Chos! She wanted to run to him, to kiss him, hold him, most importantly she wanted to tell him how much she missed him, but AleXander’s words from last night kept playing over and over in her head.

As AleXander straightened and lead her to her chair, she masked her features making them uncaring. Her voice while she was sure it had trembled a bit, still sounded nonchalant, “Why have you invited the enemy to dine with us M’Lord?”

AleXander was not blind to the fact that his betrothed’s gaze had yet to leave that of the Lupirian Emperor’s. “I thought it only fitting that he be the first to know that the silly little prophecy his parents and yours thrived for, will never come to happen.”

At that point, Ember did tear her gaze from Chos long enough to look at AleXander confused. She knew some of the prophecy, but no one had told her any details. What could Chos possibly have to do with it? “Prophecy?”

She tore her gaze from the dark voids that belonged to her king, and for the first time noticed the person accompanying Chos. Her gaze traveled over his fiery mane of hair that was pulled back into a tail, his amber gaze watched her intently. She was certain if the male removed the cloak he wore, there would be red dragon wings. She opened to mouth to speak, but the fiery haired male shook his head no, just enough that only Ember caught the movement.

AleXander let the exchange between Ember and the wolf’s friend go seemingly unnoticed before he spoke again. “Yes. You see I told you I had a long talk with my sister. Poor Isis by the end she was unfolding her very heart. She even mentioned a few things about those two servants you arrived with… No matter that will be dealt with at a later time. Isis told me of the legendary prophecy. One that would begin with a ruler of Caprae and a ruler of Lupiria.. Well back then it was just the Solstyce Woods making an unbreakable union. Then she told me about the unholy relationship between yourself and Emperor Chos.”

Realization hit Ember like a sledge hammer. That was why she was never told, from the look on Chos’ face, he had not been told either. The prophecy had to begin with a natural union, and now? Now AleXander had all but secured his place as King and Oni of the horde.

“With that information in mind, I felt it only fitting that Chos here be the first to know about our engagement.” AleXander smirked coldly.

Chos set his jaw. Ember had never seen him look so angry before. His words were low and deliberate. “Engagement? And you’re okay with this arrangement?”

AleXander gave her a look that sent shivers down her spine. “Yes Emperor Chos. I am quite taken with King AleXander.”

“And what about us? What about what we have?” Chos thundered as he stood up so roughly his chair clattered to the floor.

The fiery haired male placed a calming hand on his shoulder as he too stood.

“You said yourself Chos… We can never be. So I suppose we never had anything.” While her voice remained strong, the tears that slipped down her cheeks betrayed her. She was grateful AleXander was too engrossed with watching Chos’ reaction to pay her any mind.

Chos growled. “I should have known you were no different than the rest of your kind!”

“Enough Chos..” The fiery haired male spoke softly, though with authority.

Chos set his murderous gaze on AleXander. “This isn’t over AleXander. You will pay for this! On my life you will pay!”
