Q&A with the lovely Christine Hughes Most of my favorite authors are indie or self-pubbed, what made me you decide to go that route?
It was pretty organic. When I started querying, I didn’t do much research about the process. I didn’t research trends, market, agencies… I was green and honestly, just happy to have the book published. With what I know now, I made a great decision to keep indie.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
How hard it is to write a query, a synopsis, a blurb. I had no idea what went into polishing a book. It’s kind of like second nature now.
Which of your characters are you most like? Least like?
I think I am most like Samantha. I know I have the strength inside me, sometimes it takes a bit to find it. Least like? Madison from Three Days of Rain. She was fun to write but, man, what a bitch.
Do you have a particular writing habit?
Coffee, early morning, procrastination…
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
That would change daily, based on my mood. Sometimes I wish I could pick the brain of Stephenie Meyer – a stay at home mom, like me. Other days I want to know how Stephen King keeps so fresh. Then there’s Harlan Coben – snarky and suspenseful. Nora Roberts/JD Robb – wildly successful in two genres.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Sarah Jayne Carr has me hooked on her Hamilton series. The end of Embracing Hamilton had me texting her with a huge WTF? Nola Sarina has a great novella series out – Gilded Destiny and Jaded Touch. Wow! Sexy Vespers! I think L. R. Wright has a great career ahead of her. Basement Level Five was terrific. I know there are more…I’ve just read some great stuff lately by some amazing authors.
Who designed the covers?
Jay Sabo designed the first cover for TORN and Rue Volley designed the second cover for the Crushing Hearts and Black Butterfly release. Simone Becchetti took the photo for Three Days of Rain.
What is the hardest part of your writing?
Revising and editing. I can’t ever see my own grammatical issues and typos. I also hate cutting chunks out of the writing.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep writing. Don’t stop. Even if it’s only a hundred words a day, it’s more than what you had yesterday.
Describe yourself in three words.
Fun, thoughtful, open
I know characters are like children but if you could chose, who’s your favorite from your books? Of all time?
Fave from my books – Oh…Damien from Darkness Betrayed, the sequel to TORN. You’ll find out in September why. All time? Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. If he had just declared his love for Romeo, maybe he wouldn’t have been in so much pain.
Any song or songs that could basically sum up the overall mood of your book?
All I Need by Within Temptation. Youtube the video.
Do you plot out your books or just freely write them and let the characters tell you what to do next?
Generally, I can’t plot for crap. It’s all a mess of fuzz in my head until it’s written down. For the WIP I’m working on, and untitled thriller, I have to write stuff down – but I take notes as I go. I don’t want someone to find a plot ole and mess up the whole storyline.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider the biggest influence in your writing?
No one in particular. I love writing. I love reading. It would only make sense one day I would create stories for others.
What are your current projects? Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I am working on an untitled thriller. Mash together Clue, Lois Duncan’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” and you’ve got the gist. 10 teens, picked off one by one… whodunit and why?
Excerpt: I knew it was dangerous, but the voice was so tempting... Samannnnthaaaa... Unable to speak, I wiped the beads of sweat from my forehead and looked around. I swung my head toward the window and peered outside, searching for the source of the taunting voice. Where was he? The sky had darkened significantly and just beyond the trees I saw a swirling shadow that seemed to pulse. The vegetation surrounding it had withered, becoming gray and lifeless as though the shadow had sucked up all of the energy. A faint hum filled the air, growing louder as the shadow pulsed faster. Samannnnnnthaaaa...It’s time. Join us. “Where are you?” I could barely get the words out. “What do you want from me?” This voice had plagued me for months and I wanted to know for sure it was Sebastian, yet the thought of finally knowing, finally seeing him, scared me more than the uncertainty. The voice chuckled. Join us and I will show you everything. “Never,” I whispered. “Never. My father died protecting me. I will never come to you.” Again, a high-pitched and foul laugh rang in my head, making it spin. Dark clouds rolled ominously overhead, the wind picked up and the dull humming became inescapable white noise. Silly girl. You will come to us. You will make the choice. It is your destiny. Despite my protest, I stepped toward the window then, leaning over the sink, I reached up to unlock it. My reflection was unrecognizable in the glass. My hair was wild and my eyes were huge and black as shadows emanated from within me. Whatever was out there was reaching for me with ghostly fingers, and as I opened the window, a dark mist snaked toward the house. I closed my eyes in giddy anticipation of the unknown.
About the Author
A former Army brat, Christine Hughes moved quite often. She spent much of her time losing herself in books and creating stories about many of the people she'd met. Falling in love with literature was easy for her and she majored in English while attending college in New Jersey. Not sure where her love of reading and writing fit, she became a middle school English teacher. After nine years of teaching others to appreciate literature, she decided to take the plunge and write her first novel. Now at home focusing on making writing her new career, she spends her time creating characters and plot points instead of grading papers.
