Killjoy Excerpt
Meet Garth Killjoy
Garth is presently in charge of the Intergalactic Peace Force for his sector, but he has a secret past he’s running from. What’s worse is that he also has access to something that could easily give him more power than he’s ever had…
Garth looked as though he enjoyed the power he had over James. He stood and waited, saying nothing, his eyes narrowing into slits.
James wanted to swing around and run from the room. He couldn’t read Garth and had no idea where the conversation was headed. “We’re looking into Jacobs, too. But being so far remote in the galaxy, it may take quite a while to learn the truth.” He took a breath. It felt as though he hadn’t breathed for minutes. “But he’s dead anyway. I’m sure of it.”
Garth spoke. “You did the right thing. You took things into your own hands and covered your tracks. I like that.”
James’ face and shoulders relaxed. “Thank you, sir.”
“We have to take control of C-47 before Earth Central can stop us. We’ll become part of their Independence Agreement and own those aliens down there one hundred percent,” Garth said.
“If I may, sir?”
“Absolutely, go on.”
“What if the aliens turn out to be no more intelligent than other classified animals we’ve run into? How do we know these things are the real deal and that the colony isn’t using us for their own ends, for firepower in case their independence is denied?” James crossed his arms and took a few steps farther into the room. “I’ve been a bit worried lately. We’ve gotten in pretty deep. We’ve done some things…”
Garth laughed out loud, frightening James enough for him to step back into his previous space. “Perfect. Let the colonists think there’s a possibility that they won’t gain their independence and need our help. They’re fools. You know Earth Central as well as I do. They don’t want control of the colonies anymore. They can’t afford to even cover this sector of the galaxy, let alone get involved in every damned colony that asks for help. Independence means that the colony is on its own. Through independence, the colony lets go of the Earth Central tit. And Earth Central saves trillions of dollars.” ###
